Post-Hurricane Points Of Contact, Food Safety And More: The Solution Center Week In Review, Week Of September 4, 2017

Hello, everyone:

We at the Association offer our thoughts and support to those of you recovering from Hurricane Harvey, and who have already been affected by, or are in the anticipated path of, Hurricane Irma. We care deeply about our members, and want to check on your safety, as well as offer any assistance we can, including publishing a company status update for the trade in Specialty Food News. Here are the best points of contact:

Hurricane Harvey: Members in the impacted areas, your contact is Sara Rutkowski at or 646-878-0132.

Hurricane Irma: If you are impacted by Irma, Allison Alessi is your post-storm point of contact at, or at 646-878-0146.

Please update us on how you and your employees are doing, whether or not your company is operational, how customers can reach you, and any other relevant information. Also let us know if you would like to post an update through Specialty Food News.

While direct e-mail and calls are best, if you are unable to access either but can get online, you may also send us a private message on Twitter @craftcarejoy, or tag us in an update so we can circle back to you.

Please stay safe and update us on how you are doing!

We'll kick off this week's visit with...

Happening Now and Coming Up
Stay up-to-date with the Announcements Board. Here’s a look at Association events that are happening now and approaching:

Food Safety Monday Conference Call, Monday, September 11, 1:00-1:30 PM EST
The Foreign Supplier Verification Program became law in May 2017, and FDA is expecting all importers of finished products and ingredients to prove that their sources produce safe food. However, there is much confusion as to who is actually the importer, how the safety of the food should be verified, and so on. Join Ron Tanner, SFA Vice President of Philanthropy, Government & Industry Relations and Marsha Echols, SFA’s Washington counsel for a members-only conference call, as they discuss the intricacies of FSVP. In addition, SFA will tell you about the Food Safety Plan template that FDA released in August. There's no need to pre-register; click here for the dial-in info.

If you have questions, please send an e-mail to or post to the discussion above.

Embrace Hunger Relief Month is Here!
September 1st marked the start of Embrace Hunger Relief Month. This event is a coordinated effort, with the Association and our member companies working to help our hungry neighbors by donating time, money, and/or products. As with recent hunger relief efforts, this month’s event will also be a regional showdown, with an East versus West contest. Click here for more information on how you and your organization can get involved, and how to help us track your donations.

Future Friday Video Series
Each week through early November, we’ll be adding one of the Excite Talks from the Summer Fancy Food Show as part of this series. This week’s addition: Alvyn Severien, CEO and co-founder of Algama presents “Microalgae: An Untapped Resource That Will Feed the Future.” Click the link above for a full schedule; click here to go directly to the video page.

This Week in the Q&A Forum
The Q&A Forum is a place to share industry challenges and advice, and gain peer insight, and connect with fellow members on your own schedule. Here are some recent discussions:

Custom Flavored Sugar Cubes “Wondering if anyone out there in the specialty food-iverse make and supply custom flavored sugar cubes, or can recommend a supplier?”

Specialty Condiment Broker East Coast “We produce specialty sauces and condiments and looking to expand in the New Jersey / New York vicinity and looking for a broker as well as small distributor seasoned in these areas.”

Bean To Bar Chocolate “I'm looking for information and statistics regarding bean to bar chocolate and it's market share. Are there any reports available?”

Cottage Cheese “A start up that I know is looking for a co-packer for cottage cheese. Any leads?”

This Week in the SFA Blog
The SFA Blog offers thought leadership on business and industry topics, event recaps, and more. Here’s what we published this week:

Supporting an Environment of Invention “Rather than accepting that many new companies and new products will fail, we can work to improve their chances. This will remain an exciting, thriving industry if we foster innovation, nurture business expertise, and smooth the path of products to market, creating an environment where businesses can develop and the consumer can experience our best.” In this week’s revisited post, SFA Senior Vice President of Content and Marketing Chris Crocker offers perspective on a challenge faced by so many in the industry--that of fostering innovation and trying to define what’s next while maintaining a healthy bottom line.

And of course, welcome to all of this week’s newly-registered members! It’s great to have you here, and the rest of the community is looking forward to seeing your advice, questions, and perspective in the forums.

That’s about it for this week. Have a good weekend!
